Established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, the Friends of Dighton-Rehoboth Special Education Parent Advisory Council (DRSEPAC) is committed to amplifying the goals and visions of DRSEPAC. Our primary objective is to secure funds that enrich the lives of students with special needs, their families, and educators. This is achieved by organizing top-tier workshops, inviting esteemed speakers, crafting invaluable resources, and hosting events that foster connections within our community.
A Look Back: In 2010 when the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released its "Guidance for Special Education Parent Advisory Councils". This document presented SEPACs with two financial management options: either channel their funds through their respective school districts or establish a dedicated "Friends of" organization. Recognizing the potential challenges of navigating public school financial channels, DRSEPAC collectively decided to adopt the latter approach. This SEPAC board voted on establishing the Friends of Dighton-Rehoboth Special Education Parent Advisory Council (DRSEPAC), Inc. in 2024, allowing for more direct financial oversight and streamlined operations.
Friends of DRSEPAC has made significant strides since its inception. Our mission has always been to support and empower parents, ensuring they have the resources and knowledge needed to champion their child's unique educational needs.
IEP Binder Workshop Supplies: One of our cornerstone initiatives is the IEP binder workshop. Recognizing the critical importance of being organized and prepared when advocating for a child's education, we've utilized charity funds to provide binders and essential supplies to parents in need. These tools equip them to maintain and manage their child's individualized education plan (IEP) documentation effectively.
Guest Speaker Engagements: Our commitment to continuous learning and community empowerment has led us to sponsor several guest speakers. These experts have addressed a range of pertinent topics, including:
Special needs estate planning: Providing families with the necessary guidance to secure the financial future of their children with special needs.
Basic rights evaluation and eligibility workshop: Ensuring parents have a thorough understanding of their rights and the intricacies of the evaluation process.
Section 504 workshop: Equipping parents with knowledge about this essential civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability.
Operational and Technological Expenses: Our digital presence is crucial in connecting with and educating our community. A portion of the charity funds has been allocated to cover our website domain fees and other associated technology costs. This investment ensures our platform remains accessible, informative, and a beacon of support for parents and caregivers.
As Friends of DRSEPAC, we're proud of our achievements and remain steadfast in our commitment to serve our community. With your continued support, we aim to expand our reach, provide more resources, and further our mission of championing the rights of students with special needs.
